Square Foot Gardening

I just finished reading Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew and I can’t believe that I have to wait until next spring to get started!

I learned many things about gardening. When he wrote about overplanting and not thinning enough, I felt like he was talking directly to us. 🙂 I’m looking forward to trying out his methods because I like the idea of automatic crop rotation and successive planting and the emphasis on continuous improvement of the soil.

I think he overemphasizes how little work his methods are, but that’s OK. I think we are pretty aware of what it takes to get a lot of produce.

In our garden I think we can fit 10 4′ x 4′ blocks, for a total of 160 1′ x 1′ squares. I suspect we can get a lot more harvest in our roughly 12′ x 27′ community garden plot than we have before.
